Lingering Lamentations

The more we get on in this life,
the more we look behind.
By delving deep into our past,
the more regrets we find.

They tend to spring up all at once,
invading inner peace,
attacking like a nemesis
with no intent to cease.

They plague our sense of reasoning,
then vanish, and return.
They're prickly scenes from bygone days,
with lessons to be learned.

We'll dream of going back in time
to change them one by one,
replacing them with cheerful thoughts,
to reminisce for fun.

The answer, short of magic,
is to reconcile within,
to make peace with intruding thoughts
that cause our heads to spin.

These ghosts are merely memories
which have no power or place
to seize our everyday well-being
and leave without a trace.
